What should the distance be for whistle post from a rail crossing

What's the general rule of thumb on how away a whistle post should be placed from a rail crossing? Specific railroad not needed but I am currently working on a route with both MILW & NP trackage. Thanks.

^ or 402.33 meters since that's what the games measurement system is.
