Blast Furnace/ Steel Mill

Hey all,

So briefly wanted to give a little back story before I raise my question.

I am working on the Bethlehem Pennsylvania Area working on my Lehigh Line route. I was looking for a good stand in for the Bethlehem Steel works/Sands Casino. I found a good stand in on the Ohio Steel 2 route but unfortunately I can't seem to bring the asset into my route even with the Ohio Steel assets selected. If anyone could help me figure that out it would be great.

But anyway, I was also wondering if someone had Blast furnace/ Steel Mill parts or models that I could use to represent the Bethlehem Steel Plant. I found a very incomplete version in SketchUp so I am unsure of what to do. Anyone know of any way i could accomplish this?

Thanks,

Ken

You could try and salvage some of the structures from the assets for Thomas Bontempo's "P&LE Route" which covers the Pittsburgh, PA Area. Multiple steel industry structures in there......

Now then Ken, the Ohio Steel route has some history behind it. Rich Garber developed this route and originally sold it on his Payware website, then he allowed DTG to sell it through the Steam distribution system and decided to stop folks from utilising his brand new handbuilt custom scenery assets elsewhere, so, he basically encoded them so nobody can use them in any other route (of course these Payware assets couldn't be pirated on dodgy websites either, which I think was the whole idea behind his thinking - which you couldn't really blame him for), however, it caused a lot of argument and resentment within the community, across the whole of North America and the Atlantic, as many Brits and Europeans also obtained his Payware routes of course, so, it's a hot potato politically, I wouldn't open any old wounds either if I was you, let's just leave things as they are in the Status Quo, but, at the end of the day, no, you can't use HIS scenery assets for anything other than the route that they are currently placed on.

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.

Good explanation Ex-railwayman. Definitely a hot potato. As mentioned above, Try the excellent P&LE route.
He built a lot of steel industry buildings around Pittsburgh. On top of that, its a pretty good route. !!*ok*!!

Wow... I wasn't aware of that... good to know...

So... the thing is i checked the P&LE route and it has a bunch of assets i need, but not a blast furnace. The Sands/Bethlehem is such a big part of the Bethlehem area and such a big landmark I need something in the sim to either be it, or so similar to it that you know what it is.
Here's what I found in sketchup: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model. ... 6edc5121d4
As well as https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model. ... 468bce59be

The only problem is the first is missing a lot...

here's some pictures...

http://www.architecturalrecord.com/ext/ ... -thumb.jpg
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... _Steel.jpg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sands_Cas ... h_sign.JPG

As you can see from the pictures i'd need a lot of custom work done...(as well as lighting...i thought that would be a cool addition)
So any ideas would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Ken

So I found a blast furnace I would LOVE to use as a base for the Bethlehem Blast Furnace/complex It's from DAZ3D. (http://www.daz3d.com/steel-town-blast-furnace).
what I was going to do was texture it in daz3d then convert it to a blender object, edit it down to individual components then convert those building parts into TS2015 format to import into the game and essentially build the complex piece by piece.

Now the only problem is when i Import the files into blender I have no textures even though DAZ3d exported the material file (.mtl) with the Object. Am I doing something wrong? Also, is there any easy way to convert it to the proper format after you build the IGS file?

Any help on this process would be greatly appreciated.

Ken

Hi,

I'm fairly sure I misunderstood your question, but in case I didn't: the IGS is the final export file you need. The rest is handled by the blueprint editor: drop IGS file into your desired folder tree (for example, SOURCE\ [your provider name]\ [your product name]\ Scenery\ Steelmill\) and the textures in a subdirectory "textures" underneath the former folder. Then start the blueprint editor from the RW launcher, right click on your IGS file, select "create new scenery blueprint" on the context menu. Fill in the display name, set the two Detail Level Generation boxes to 10, save, export. Done!

Cheers,
Michael

Edit/PS: The old Railworks Wiki, an expanded and 'wikified' version of the Rail Simulator Dev-Docs, has a lot of info about the blueprint editor and the processes of getting various custom assets into the game: http://railworkswiki.com/tiki-index.php ... ent+Basics

Hi all,

I hate to resurrect this thread from the dead, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas (or wanted to help me model) the Steel Stacks in Bethlehem, PA. I would also want to do the Sands Casino section as well. If anyone wants to help out or has any direction I could go in that would be a big help.

Ken.

Just to inject a bit of history: the PL&E route did not originate with Thomas Bontempo. I can't remember the name of its creator anymore (Jim something?), but I do recall having written scenarios for it -- probably my first work of that kind. "Nostalgia isn't what it used to be!"

Is this route even available somwhere? Or has it vanished with the death of Ottodad?

P&LE route has so much potential that was never realised.

I still have a "final" version from 2012, with assets and a "water change" file that probably comes from Otto.

It might be better to say that Toripony's excellent though never completed C&O Allegheny Route died at the hands of Bontempo and Ottodad. Much of its lamentable history can be found right here at RWA: http://railworksamerica.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=14.

The PL&E, similarly, met its demise at the hands of Ottodad alone, who convinced the route's inventor (yes, Jim something) to "extend" the route ridiculously to Chicago and beyond. Before OD's "intervention", the PL&E was a very serviceable, well-designed route. After I created a scenario for it that took place in a fairly remote corner of the PL&E world and involved some tricky switching work, Jim carved my name into the approach to that fragment.

If memory serves (and mine is frequently rebellious these days) Ottodad also managed to mangle several of Bontempo's routes, largely due to the former's loops mania.

Here's to the routes that were! !*cheers*!

Although I can't help with steel mill structures, let me suggest a rolling stock pack: http://dickyjim.com/special_packs.html.
