Turning rollingstock into scenery

Unread postby ozinoz » Sun Dec 01, 2013 4:23 pm

Not quite sure where to post this. Can anybody point me in the direction of info on how to turn rollingstock into a scenery item. I would like to be able to place some derailed rollingstock, but obviously rollingstock as rollingstock is glued to the rails.

Many thanks,

ps: any ideas on what is involved in changing coupling types? (from British to US knuckle, or will they just automatically couple even if not proto?)

Thanks again...

I've done this before with a Kuju caboose that I wanted to sit static by the tracks, like many small American towns have done. You need to make a Scenery blueprint in the Asset Editor, fill in the required information (name, type, etc), then export it to the game. Then you need to open the finished .BIN file with RW tools or the editor of your choice and finish it by inserting the path to the rolling stock GeoPcDx file into the required field. Just be aware that if RSC changes things up in the future, you might have to repath the Geo in your .BIN file.

Far as changing couplers, you would again need to edit the .BIN file of the rolling stock in question. There is a section near the top of the BIN that points to whatever coupling the car is using. You will need to know where the coupler you want to substitute is located, then change the path to point to that coupler. As far as mixing coupler types, I do not know, as I have never tried it.

This might be a silly idea, but perhaps another way would be to lay a short piece of track and hide it slightly below ground, then place the rolling stock on it.

Not silly, but it does add another piece to your Tracks.bin file. Also, you may not be able to orient your rolling stock in the desired direction if you are trying to simulate a derailment.

Thanks guys...

Its just that Paul at IHH has a neat steam breakdown crane that I thought I would acquire before his models disappear, but to have a breakdown crane something must be broken *!lol!* Will need a paint job, but I think it will be a nice piece of scenery...

You don't have to make anything in Asset Editor. I've made static locos and cars by editing in the scenery folder. I'll post one here.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Excellent, that is the sort of thing.

So, what so I need to do to turn it from rolling stock to scenery. Is just placing the rolling stock folder within the scenery folders enough? I wouldn't have thought so *!question!*
