I think I'm going to change how I approach Modeling Class.

Tips and discussion about scenery creation for RailWorks.

I think I'm going to change how I approach Modeling Class.

Since it was originally intended to be an interactive class... and since there seems to be a lacking of interaction, perhaps this would be better done as more of a textbook approach.

Over the next few weeks/days whatever it takes... I will be creating a Getting Started with 3D Canvas guide. Lets see if that works out better.

Hello there teach,

I just started using railworks, long time MTS user. I would really like to be able to create things for my route projects. However, right now im learning the basics to route building. What i would really like is as you say a textbook approach. A tutorial step by step written with pics to follow, perhaps a youtube video. When i get to the point that i need to start creating assets, then ill be able to read your tutorial.

Railworks is great, now that we have Dash9s with headlights working and multiple engine throttle up sounds, thanks Pikehkr. But we really need more tutorials on how to "do things", and your modeling class tutorial is really needed.

I would appreciate a tutorial about using Canvas for RW.

yes I agree, a text book approach would work better for me. Since my stroke I have great problems learning and doing stuff from the screen, and really need to be able to print stuff out to follow.
I may have a Phd, but some things just need explaining step by step. Lots picts etc always helps. I know there are others that have simular problems and would be guided greatly by any thing that the Teacher can provide.

I also agree, a text book approach would be better for me as I can concentrate on a printed paper vs screen.

I think your approach to the topic is right on, though... don't change that. What frustrates me with trying to learn 3D development is all the disjointed and piece-meal information. If I follow the nice lessons that come with any of the editors, I learn a lot of stuff I don't need or that won't work for RW stuff. If I try to dive straight in following the available RW oriented tutorials, I find a fast-written, assumptive note on how to do X, then a forum post on how to do Y, and something from the game manual on how to do Z. What's missing is how/why/where/when to connect X to Y to Z.

The information on routebuilding out there is the same way... I started once to write a comprehensive "textbook" style document on the entire process of getting started including things to consider before making decisions that you can't change later. There are no tutorials that include that critical component and I think that is what frustrates some potential new talent. Surprisingly though, there was little interest in such a document.

Hello Pete,

After very-belatedly finding the original first-lesson of the modelling class, have you made any progress with your new version?

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.
