So to make a shadow of a eucalyptus tree, I need to basically clone what is the white alpha channel, with a flat pane in 3d resembling the same rough outline?

No, you must have a solid object, unfortunately that means you can't do a stencil shadow for forward facing trees. With 3d trees you can though.

What is the easiest way to add shadow to a non animated model in 3D Crafter.

And would it hurt a already polygon heavy model.

As of TS2012 you don't need to add the shadow models anymore, depending on the shadow setting you have

I would still add a low ql one at least - don't forget a lot of people can't run with TSX shadows on at the moment, and there's a fair chunk of people who can't run TSX at all. TSX shadws generally aren't very strong, but that might be something to do with the default weather.
