3DC crashes when exporting IGS file

Unread postby cnwfan » Sun Jul 06, 2014 9:33 am

I have posted the below problem on the Amabilis support forum, but I thought I'd try posting it here too. I found a post where PapaXpress ran into the same problem last year, but there wasn't any followup posts on how the problem was resolved. So...

I have been unable to export an IGS file through multiple versions of 3DC. I’ve tried existing models that exported successfully a year ago, along with a new test cube model. In all instances, 3DC crashes. When I check the event viewer log, the following event is recorded.

Faulting application name: 3DCrafter.exe, version: 9.2.0.2546, time stamp: 0x4ffca144
Faulting module name: MSVBVM60.DLL, version: 6.0.98.15, time stamp: 0x4a5bda6c
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000e6c52
Faulting process id: 0x1c24
Faulting application start time: 0x01cf99212ea9ad98
Faulting application path: C:\3DCrafter 92\3DCrafter.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\MSVBVM60.DLL
Report Id: 9082c29a-0514-11e4-b0c5-180373e30628

I checked for the MSVBVM60.DLL file in the system32 folder, and it was missing. I found the Visual Basic 6.0 runtime on the Microsoft site, and extracted the file, and placed in the system32 folder. Tried running the export again, and it still crashes. The only difference I can see is that error log is saying v6.0.98.15 for the DLL, and the version I have installed is 6.0.97.82. I remember from previous Windows problems, that the DLL’s needed to be the same version. It should also be noted that 3DC itself runs without any problems, in any version. I can build models just fine. It’s just running the IGS export that’s causing a headache. Any assistance is greatly and always appreciated. Thanks!

Can you tell me the exact steps you're taking when exporting a model. I'm trying to figure this out, but I don't understand code.

Also, how many polygon's are the models, a model that's too large with too many faces could have that result from what I know.

It's a simple 1 foot square cube... 8 triangles in all. it's textured with a single 32 bit bmp texture that is 64x64. Texture is a single color... an off white. All faces are textured. I confirmed the TrainBasicObjectDiffuse.fx shader is applied to the Rail Sim custom property. When I export, I click on the object, go to File -> Export -> Trainworks -> RailSim IGS file type. I answer to NO to letting the export program calculate LODs as I have that stated in the group name (1_0050_Test). I can't get any simpler than that. I'm using v9.2.2 with Paul's 9.2.2 plugins.

I know this simple test worked last June, which was the last time I exported a model out. It's the same computer as then, although a number of apps have been installed since then. Heck, I even tried turning off the anti-virus. From what I've read on some Microsoft forums, this particular dll file is used for calling certain ActiveX objects, and this particular dll version is buggy. I found and installed a lower version of the same dll, but the results were the same.

As an update, I found the MSVBVM60.DLL version: 6.0.98.15 on the Microsoft Tech Net website. It was downloaded and copied over to the windows\system32 directory. I registered it through regsvr32 without any problems. Computer was restarted, and I'm still getting the error.

Maybe as a test, I can PM you the files, and you can try generating the IGS file on your end. If it works, then we eliminated the 3DC project file as a possible culprit. Any other questions, let me know. Like my son's math homework, this one has be stumped! Thanks!

Try exporting though Plug Ins and then the Train Simulator Wizard.

I usually have a ton of problems trying to export from File and Export, but through the Train Simulator Wizard I have no problems.

See if this helps and then tell me if it worked or not.

....

I hope that this helps.

...Cheers...

Shouldn't a cube be made of 12 triangles?

Oopps... should be 12 triangles. So here's the latest update. I was finally able to get the IGS exported using the Trainworks plugin. When I first ran it through, it added an Alpha Pr custom property with a value of zero (0), along with adding Transparency to the Tx Alpha property. I edited out both of those values in the material manager plugin, but left the properties alone. Ran it through a second time, and it worked. Created the scenery blueprint... and you can see the results for yourself. Yes... it's a small blue cube... but its a major victory in my book.

So, there is something up with using the File -> Export -> Trainworks method. I could have sworn this worked last year, but at this point I guess it really doesn't matter. At least now I can get a set of primitive buildings into the route for sizing purposes. Thank you for the help... and getting me pointed in the right direction again. *!!thnx!!*

I have always had problems with getting file export to work right, whenever I do it it does export, but the item never appears and when you try to place it in the sim it's like it's invisiable.

If you need help I'll be here.

You are off to a good start.

Here are some more tutorials, I hope you will find helpful. There are several more up on engine driver as well.

3dC won't even load on my operating system. What have you done to get it to work?

I am running Windows7 64bit. When I installed 3DC in the c:\Program Files (x86), it had nothing but problems. It consistently crash on loading. I remember reading on a Windows tech forum post about older 32 bit applications crashing when the app is installed in the Program Files (x86) directory. Some respondents said they had better luck installing the app directly under c:\. I did this for my install of MS Train Simulator, and it fixed a whole host of problems I was having with the game. So, I completely uninstalled 3D Crafter in the c:\Program Files (x86) directory, and reinstalled in c:\3DCrafter 92\. Sure enough, that did the trick, and it's been running ever since.

Let me also say that this worked for my computer and operating system. It may or may not work in your situation. So, please don't hold me liable if it crashes your machine. Hope this helps.

This is an unusual problem. I know of a lot of people including myself who have installed on Win 7 x64 to Program Files x86 and have had no problems, so its hard to figure out what the problem is and how to fix it.

If you can wait I know v10 will be based on .Net which will work better just because it will no longer rely on VB6 (yup that old win 95 stuff).
