Cattle Guards

Back years ago, a lot of land in Louisiana and Texas was considered "open range". As such, many rural roads and some highways had "cattle guards" installed. Now, cattle guards are mainly found on farms and ranches. I discovered today that the "flat car load RAILS" makes a pretty decent cattle guard! Give it a try. All you have to do is "bury" it to road level. :D

Sometimes they used old rails! Sorry but I don't have pictures from that trip.

I wonder how many miles of old abandoned logging tracks got "recycled" into cattle guards over the years. Most of them I can remember on the highways were indeed built with old rails. Some of the farmers around my area built them out of old pipe but soon found out that a heavy tractor and trailer loaded with cotton would bend them.
