And yet, I have Jay Winn's live recordings of the D&H RF-16s, and other recordings, and they sound nothing like Reppo's sounds.
Admittedly, my samples are low-quality and were taken in less than optimal situations, but still they sound really different.

I think the sounds we hear from a working locomotive depend on more factors than just the engine model. I would guess the loco's car body and exhaust configuration has a greater effect than anything else.

In the game I have swapped the sounds from Mannu's FA-1 with those from the RS-11. They probably are not correct, but I couldn't care less: before, they were horrible, now they sound nice.

So my point is, get these RS-3 recordings to Mannu and who cares if they aren't from a PA-1 !

Amen. I want more alcos.

I can appreciate the problems finding appropriate sound files for a PA. Some of you may recall I made some PAs for MSTS in the early 2000s. I don't recall where the sound files we used came from or whether the recordings were of a PA or of a comparable locomotive. At any rate they're not mine to share.

Doyle McCormack, founder of the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation, owns one of the few remaining PAs, which you can read about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel_Plate_Road_190 As the article says, the locomotive is just about fully restored and Doyle has installed an ALCo 251 engine in it. (The original PAs used the 244 engine. Details, details!) Anyway, the plan is for the locomotive to be operational this year. Perhaps one of the "sound guys" here would like to contact the ORHF for permission to make recordings.

In the meantime I received some very good sounds for the 244. Am waiting for permission to use them. I'm not real slick with the video thing but I'll try to put something up.

Not out of the question. Actually, D&H's rebuilds of the ATSF PAs all had 251s in them if I recall correctly.
ORHF is only a 20 min drive from where my cousin lives, so if they have it done by April 30th I could make it a side trip when I take vacation.

Sooo what we need is either some quality sounds from a RS-3 (Same prime mover 244) or if someone ever got a good recording from 190 even though it is engined in a 251 now. The better choice would be a good RS-3 recording. He said if he got sounds he would get back on it.
!!det!!

I know the perfect place, The Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation has an operating Alco PA-1 in Nickle Plate road colors owned by Doyle McCormick Himself. That's the place to find good quality sounds.

The PA in Portland does NOT have a 244 in it. It has a old 251 from a old BCRail B unit.

He purchased a D&H PA-1 and had it completely rebuilt to match the NKP versions.
