yeah that didn't work. I tried to add 1 and 3 to the offending poly and changed the other ones but still not blending. if I undo the channel then it blends. but it has to have a smoothing group assigned or it wont look right in the game. what now?

Just so we're clear, it's not 1 and three (the above was just an example), but two (or more) values needed to make all adjoining polys play nice. It could also be that the original problematic poly needs an additional chamfer. If you prefer, you can clone a few of the surrounding polys and send me the saved Max scene and I can take a look where the problem might be. FWIW, the newest version of Max I have installed is 12, so if yours is newer, you can export to OBJ instead.
Cheers!

i'll export it tonight when I get home and will do a scene file and a obj in case.

If you do figur it out please explain what you did because Im sure this will happen again in the future. Thanks Marc. In the meantime I can still bake it as this seems to be a smoothing issue.

The 'Export' command is not needed, using the 'Save As' command will allow you save the file 'For' Max 11, 12 or 13...much like Max 12 saving for Max 11. All standard Max attributes will be retained.

That doesn't always work, and in this case, it didn't. I can send back in Max format, however.
Cheers!

Clearly then, we must be doing something wrong when selecting the format, or the size, 5 million polygons +/- per object, and complexity of said files are a problem...Not a single failure in the last 2 years, with at least 90 saves for 1 project, to Max 12 from 13 and 14.

We? I thought Ian was doing the model? Don't shoot me - all I did was attempt to open it. I've been using Max since DOS, so I'm not exactly a neophyte.

'We' would be my place of employment, which would explain the 5 million + polygons. And no, I'm not any part of this at all.

Still, if you've got a reproducible bug in the save routine, I'm sure the guys in Singapore might like to know about it, a fix might magically appear.

No issues on my end, but then I'm not the one doing the saving. *!!wink!!*

Im not sure what you guys are talking about at all. All my projects are my own doing. I'll get a 2011 max file over to you tonight marc. I can save my scene in 2010-2014 .max so you will be able to open it.

Oddly enough in real life (about a week ago) a CSX (Ex Conrail) Sd80MAc came up here to Washington State. Quite rare!
