If as the blog post says, the coal stage is abandoned, does this mean there are no active steam facilities at this end of the route, or is it just abandoned in appearance? From a personal view, would be a shame...(there is no begging smilie :D )

Hi,

has it been possible to align the turntable up with one of the lead roads in like roundhouse in Springfield?

We found a very simple solution to the problem: just enter the route in free roam, align the turntable to your preferred position, enter the route editor (Ctrl+E) & save the route. Enter the scenario editor to create a new scenario or go back to play mode. The turntable now has a new default alignment for all new scenarios. It's the same method that can be used to change the scenario-default state of regular switches, it works on any route. !!*ok*!!

does this mean there are no active steam facilities at this end of the route, or is it just abandoned in appearance?

The coaling tower was abandoned in reality, but we can still make it operational for scenario purposes, like in Springfield. It'll probably be a simple model with only basic animations, also like in Springfield.

Cheers

Its a small world

Unread postby ozinoz » Sat Nov 14, 2015 5:34 pm

Its a small world...

In today's 21st century, the world has become a much smaller place; you can get on a plane and be virtually anywhere on the planet in 24 hours and it is not unheard of to bump into people you know when you get there.

In the first half of the 20th century, the world was considerably bigger. Imagine my surprise when I came across a photo in a new book on my local rail network from the days of steam, of ex New York, New Haven and Hartford G 4a # 846 not 200 miles from my childhood home here in South Australia, some 10000+ miles from its home ground. Built in 1907, it was sent to Australia in 1943 to assist in our war effort and was assigned to the Commonwealth Railways in northern South Australia as their CA78, it lasted in service until 1945. The photo shows it on the scrap line at Port Augusta, not 200 miles north of my childhood home (albeit more than a decade before I was born *!!wink!!* ) in 1952. It lasted there till 1956 before finally being hit with the cutters torch.

just a tidbit of trivia while we wait on the next update from Michael & Bob on the next extension of the VNHRR, and goes to show you are never too old to learn something new. This was certainly new news to me...

The story gets even better: 846 made the trip down under with a sister (820, IIRC, becoming Commonwealth Railways 79). One of the pair had the nasty habit of repeatedly throwing a tire on the main driving wheel, earning herself the nickname "The Kangaroo" for the behavior that would inevitably follow the incident. I'm sure some of the old-timers still around may know of this, or at least have heard the story passed along.

I'd always hoped one of these had survived the gas axe. IMHO they were the most graceful locomotives the New Haven operated; and were rare in having been built by Baldwin, the New Haven having a decided preference for Alco until that builder quit altogether.

If you haven't checked out the latest blog update (it has been a bit quiet of late) it seems the guys have been very busy under the hood - looks like the next version will come equipped with a new, far more prototypical signalling system. Now all we need is to be able to get our greasy fingers on it !*roll-laugh*!

I finally took the time to try this TT alignment trick and discovered that I'm missing a bit of knowledge. I got as far as aligning the TT and entering the route editor, but then couldn't figure out how to save the route. Please excuse my ignorance -- I'm not a route builder and have never used the route editor.

Yes, but only if I've made changes to the route, right? At least that was the case when I tried realigning a transfer table in a German route. So I moved a small thing-a-ma-gig about two iotas and right back again, and then clicked that arrow: sure enough, the route got saved. After saving the scenario as well, I closed and reopened it and, sure enough, the transfer table's bridge was lined up with the track on which my engine sat.

In the end, though, the joke was on me: the track on that transfer table is phony! The instant a wheel hits it, the engine derails and down the rabbit hole goes the scenario. Thanks a million to the creators of the Manheim to Karlsruhe route!!!

In the long run, the important thing is that this alignment trick works -- but how does that get saved as part of the scenario? Especially since interactive objects, such as turntables, cannot be manipulated in the scenario editor? Another episode of RSC Mystery Theater?

For simplicity's sake, I hope that Michael can fix this before final release (hopefully he will see this **!!bow!!** )

The problem being if it is left to the individual user, it will mean that no scenerios can be shared / uploaded that make use of the realignment, incase anybody downloading them hasnt done it, it will cause the scenerio to crash.

Fingers crossed...

If you were responding to my message, it regarded a transfer table on the Karlsruhe-Mannheim route ----- nothing to do with the VNHRR.

Tom,

I can't think of a way to set a turntable or transfer table in the scenario editor. For all standard switches it works of course by simply clicking their blue dots on the 2D map. A turntable though? No idea how one could accomplish that.

Now, trying to get back on topic: the turntables on our route have all been 'realigned' for a clear path through from the TT lead into roundhouse stall opposite the lead track. I'll have a look at the transfer table at the B&A shops to make sure it's similarly aligned.

Cheers
Michael
