Its a small world...
In today's 21st century, the world has become a much smaller place; you can get on a plane and be virtually anywhere on the planet in 24 hours and it is not unheard of to bump into people you know when you get there.
In the first half of the 20th century, the world was considerably bigger. Imagine my surprise when I came across a photo in a new book on my local rail network from the days of steam, of ex New York, New Haven and Hartford G 4a # 846 not 200 miles from my childhood home here in South Australia, some 10000+ miles from its home ground. Built in 1907, it was sent to Australia in 1943 to assist in our war effort and was assigned to the Commonwealth Railways in northern South Australia as their CA78, it lasted in service until 1945. The photo shows it on the scrap line at Port Augusta, not 200 miles north of my childhood home (albeit more than a decade before I was born

) in 1952. It lasted there till 1956 before finally being hit with the cutters torch.

just a tidbit of trivia while we wait on the next update from Michael & Bob on the next extension of the VNHRR, and goes to show you are never too old to learn something new. This was certainly new news to me...
