last pic before it hits the baking process. I need to put in some more details for the bake but this is basically the model that you will see on the rails in a while. All work from here is done on max. the front trucks will be baked the back are just place holders. antennae will be placed as well prior to baking as well has handle bars on the nose both sides. will have a pic when that's all done.

Ian

wow that so so impressive good job. question will there be handrails on the plow or no.

Explain to me what "baking" the model is. Would that be adding paint to it or what?

Ambient occlusion (artificial shadows). The end process gives the model visual depth by defining right angles and hidden surfaces.

Looks great, Ian. However, there's a slight issue where the where the nose meets the cab. It might either be smoothing or the texture bake. If the latter, then you'll need to edit the shadow texture or stitch the panel for that section.

Nope that's just smoothing. It's only smoothed at 25.0 degrees that's why it's rigid. I'll bump it up to 35 and see how it reacts. I didn't bake it yet. In 3ds max 2014 there is a nitrous feature that give this pretender type casting which is why it looks baked. Thanks for the heads up.

Don't bother with auto-smoothing. It's OK for a first pass, but you'll likely need to manually adjust at the poly rather than the object level afterward.

I just re-created the polys on the nose and they definitely fixed that issue but upon smoothing the nose now looks detached and I cant get it seamless like it was? the area in the circle doesn't respond to smoothing. I had to detach that part of the nose to copy it and place on the otherside. that's when it started but I never ran into this issue before. any thoughts?

You'll need to add an additional smoothing channel to the edited poly. For example, if the smoothing channel was originally a value of "1", and changing it to "3" fixed the first issue, but messed up the side cab panel, then assign the poly that you edited a value of "1" and "3" and see if that solves the problem. If not, then you can return the edited poly to its original state and try editing the poly above the corner containing two smoothing values instead.

Like modeling and texturing, smoothing is tricky and is an art in itself.
Cheers!
