Quite honestly I hope Anthony was able to get his engine sounds in there. Those are great sounds. Yes, the RPMs are rather high when HEP is turned on, but when turned off, it's rather quiet.

The P42DC's GE 7FDL prime mover spins at 900 rpm (notch 4 or so) when supplying HEP. When not supplying HEP, the prime mover is free to operate within it's design range of ~200 rpm to 1047 rpm. Not sure if this is possible within the game engine at the moment, but in order to simulate this properly, you would need two tractive effort files (one for non-HEP mode, and one for HEP mode), since the power output to the traction motors differs between the modes. Maximum HP to the motors when the prime mover is spinning freely at 1047 rpm is 3850 hp. While locked at 900 rpm, max hp to the motors is 3550 (with no HEP being siphoned off). This HEP difference creates different traction characteristics. But to be honest, if they were just able to give the P42DC a feature that just locked the prime mover at 900 rpm (don't even have to create different traction characteristics) like they did with the EMD F59PHi when they gave it a separate HEP engine that you could activate by pressing "m," it would be a great step up from the original release.

That would take extensive LUA script work, and I doubt DTG would do it.
However, that does bring a good point, whether or not I should model the sound in non-HEP mode too...

Just thought of it, but the other way to do it would just be to clone the P42DC files and make one unit operate with HEP off, and the other with HEP on. So basically you would have two identical engines operating in two different modes with two different traction characteristics.

If you already own the P42DC Genesis from Railsimulator.com, bought through Steam, we’re happy to say that you will receive the Amtrak P42 DC ‘Empire Builder’ for free! This update will automatically be applied to your Steam account in the next few hours, and your game will update the next time you log into Steam."

Betcha a buck they don't tell you how to do that, just push the "Q" button when it goes off to shut it off.

So in a case like this will the old workshop scenarios work? I only see one p42 Genesis on the list of locomotives and it shows all the existing scenarios when clicked.

I just ran two scenarios for the Genesis, one of the new ones included with the update, and one Workshop scenario. In the new one, the cab view does not include the Pepsi can in the holder, but in the Workshop scenario, the Pepsi can IS there. So I seem to be seeing both old and new P42DCs. I'm confused. !*don-know!* It also happened with the new DDA40X where a new scenario and a Workshop one showed different in-cab and "Shift-2" head out the window views.
Anyone else have the same experience? Or perhaps an answer?
Thanks,
Marc !*cheers*!

EDIT: Well I found an answer to the Genesis part in another post - both locos exist in the file structure. Can't see similar for the DDA40X though.

Yes.
The users that already own the old locomotive, after getting the update will have the locomotive in duplicate. The new locomotive has been installed in the prov/prod RSC/P42Pack01, and the old locomotive remains in the prov/prod
G-Trax/Genesis.
