Big Boy 4014's Actual Whistle

Unread postby RasucitNemilos747 » Sat May 18, 2019 10:56 am

A couple whistle packs for Big Boy have been released on RailWorksAmerica, but none of them sound remotely close to the actual whistle of 4014 now that it is running again. I think it’s unfair to have a whistle labeled "Big Boy's Real Whistle" when it sounds like an early air horn.

If anybody knows how to make whistles, please tell me so I can do it myself, or see if anyone has posted an actual whistle for Big Boy yet. Thanks and have a good day!

What we really need in the US is someone like Steam Sounds Supreme from the UK who go around and record sounds from various steam locos and make sound packs for TS2019. I would think for them to come over and record Big Boy 4014 sounds that the cost would be prohibitive. https://www.steamsoundssupreme.com/

I would certainly think with all of the people recording and chasing 4014 in the last few weeks that someone would have made a recording capable of being made into a whistle for TS.

Yeah if you could find a video where it is using the whistle stationary, then you’d just need to rip the audio from YouTube (there are programs online that can do this) and use a free audio editor to slice it up.

Here is another. Just about the one minute mark the first time. Then several at the five minute mark.

Fear not, I have one in the works. I also have a new bell as well. Once I fix up the whistle a bit I'll see if I can post a sample of it.

I do have decent audio of it's bell from directly dead head-on as it was slowly pulling out of Ogden station for it's return trip. But you would need to isolate it a bit because there is some voices of the crowd here and there in it, plus the sound of the stream venting and at a point the sound of the helicopter above is there. You can grab it from my video when I eventually post in the next few weeks. I'm in the middle of editing 3 weeks worth of train videos from the entire trip in chronological order and the Big Boy stuff is towards the tail end of it all.

UP's railroad police and/or steam program volunteers/local railfan clubs could do a better job in protecting the spectators.

No doubt the locomotive crew is very aware of public safety, but a live steam locomotive is dangerous. Scalding hot water might spill over the trackbed at any time.

People should keep/be kept at a safer distance, not within touching distance.

Still, glad to see Big Boy draws a crowd, and not only bearded old men with a weakness for trains. Girls and women too know the significance of a relic from the past brought back to life.

Hopefully many a school essay will tell the tale of the child meeting the Big Boy that rolled into town, and UP's promo material will learn the child about safety near railroad tracks, apart from the history.

There is a pretty nice whistle in the library that was recently added by SevenXNinja. It might just be what you are looking for here.

A desktop program called Audacity can muffle this noise to a small degree. Unless the voices were close to your camera, they shouldn't be a major problem. It depends on whether or not one wants the full sound of it (lowest pitch to highest, before becoming inaudible).

Also, there are other functions in this program which should be able to deliver a desirable result. (Ie the time track function for transitionally raising the pitch). If you can't replicate the exact whistle, possibly try and find a similar sound source that was recorded in a quiet environment.
