Lost, please help.

Discussion about RailWorks route design.

Lost, please help.

Unread postby Upstairs_Chris » Mon Aug 01, 2011 11:28 pm

Hi, long time lurker here. I have some problems that I can't figure out.

I am just now getting into route design on railworks 2. I remember opening the editor within the first week of the game and I could not make heads or tails of it so I closed it. Now that I have beaten most of the routes, installed add-ons, and even made some custom changes to scenarios with RW tools I thought it was time to sit down and wrestle the bull and figure out this editor.

To my dismay, I think I started with the hardest part.

I am trying to upload terrain .hgt files and import them with the "T" key, just like everyone else. After a whole bunch of searching for this obscure file type I found them from NASA here http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/. Then I used Google Earth to find the Coordinates that I wanted and downloaded the appropriate file. I placed it just how I was told http://speedypic.net/?di=DBHI. Then I loaded up my new world in the railworks editor pressed T, with much excitement. Nothing.

So, please help me. I am getting pretty discouraged.

You haven't given much info, so here's a basic checklist.

Is your route in RailWorks set up in the correct location?

Check that Long/Lat, are not switched.

Download the area of .hgt files surrounding your area.

Make sure it's the "Scenery" icon selected (that looks like a house) when pressing 'T'

Is your folder structure correct? IE. steamapps\railworks\DEM\SRTM\ .hgt files.

My railworks is bought via steam.
I did click the house first
I included a screenshot of the file location.

I will go download the surrounding areas now, but I should have seen at least a small area right? Also, what do you mean Long/Lat switched.

I think this topic is more appropriate in the Route Design forum, so I moved it.

Did you use 1 arc second data? If not, do it. *!greengrin!*

Is your route in the right location in RailWorks. Enter the world editor, and move your mouse to the top center to see the coordinates of where you are.

I'll even go back a step to check - you mention you have RWTools, did you utilize that to create your route and set up developer's folders and such?

Also, though this might not be exactly what you want to hear, Redem is well worth the $$$ to aid in accurate terrains, much faster and more accurate than the "T key" method

@ $7 US, ReDem is cheap too - about the same as the cost of lunch at a fast food joint.
Cheers!
