Chacal wrote:I'm thinking of a realistic scenario for Donner Pass, taking into account the length of the route:

You start with the SP City of San Francisco in Sparks in 1949 with streamlined cars pulled by two Alco PAs.

You get stranded in snow in 1952 for five days and are rescued by snow blowers.

Reaching Truckee in 1955, your old PAs are replaced with brand-new EMD E9s. A few elderly passengers have died and are taken off the train. Passenger numbers kept steady by new births.

Cisco, CA, 1971. Amtrak has taken over. Your engines are repainted.

Emigrant Gap, 1973. Your ancient E9s are replaced with EMD SDP40Fs.

September 1976. A splits occurs in the community when Cars 11, 12 and 13 elect separatist mayors. Cars 11 and 12 are left in Dutch flat. The Vistadome colony in Car 13 has elected to stay but has fewer and fewer communication with the outside train.

You reach Colfax in April 1982. You have to be helped out of the cab and up into your new EMD F40PH. Violence erupts as long-time residents resist eviction from the streamlined cars into new Amfleet cars. Emissaries failed to contact Car 13, so it is just reattached at the end of the train.

May 1990. A new generation in Car 13 has taken over, explorers have found and opened the door to Car 10. Early contacts were tense, but border crossings are now frequent and your ambassador is well received. There are talks of reunification.

Newcastle, CA, June 1993. Your retirement ceremony ends in a proud moment as you watch your son take command of the brand new GE P40DC Genesis. From now on, you will assist him from the conductor's seat. You still retain your title of President but it is mostly honorary now. Migration to Superliner cars went smoothly this time, as you made sure school teachers properly prepared children, who then helped their parents and grandparents with the move. Clever.

You finally reach Roseville on October 13, 2005 but neither you nor your passengers remember why.

I'd play it !!*ok*!!

I tried taking on Donner tonight but ran into a tornado in Roseville. Didn't know RCS put those in the game. It was kinda neat to watch though. *!!wink!!*

Its been a while since I started up the ol' TrainSimulator2013 to try out the new Donner Route. I was so excited when I saw Steam downloading the update. I started downloading new workshop scenarios, a few that had and featured the P42 Genesis. To my dismay, it was no longer available for purchase on Steam. WHAT?! So now when it finally gets released again, I'll have to pay full price, awesome *!sad!*

On the upside, the new route is freakin beautiful and plays 10x better than the old one. So smooth and pretty. I'm loving the UP scenarios with the SD70M, she's such a beast.

I'm eagerly awaiting the P42s to come back on steam as well as the DDA40X.

I did notice something artistically awkward about the new route. A couple miles east of Truckee going east bound I noticed the trees on the distant mountains above the lake had trees all over it. But there was this very wide swath of clear cut up the center of the mountain that looked very odd with no trees. Reminded me of a skunk's tail with the white stripe represented here by tree-less barren ground. !*don-know!*

I hope that's a WIP cuz it looks ugly with it only having half a paint job. The franken-P42.... half heritage...half not. !*hp*!

I'm wondering how complete the track work is on this route...? I've been driving a while in the Trunkee region and noticed that the easements on those tight bends are way too short for the amount of curve vs cant on the line... So you get that wobble as you enter and exit the bends.. Rather off putting on such an awesome route... I do hope that RSC will address this, as well as the missing room occlusions from tunnels, and the dimming effect of some of the tunnels as well... Seems to me that the update that was just released in December was scenery mostly, and little bits of track work...

Small question for those in the know. Which operators use this stretch of line... At the moment, only UP and SP and depicted on the route, but I've seen BSNF as well on YT videos. It is common for many operators to use the same route and sorting yards...? Sorry for the noob questions, I'm not in the US, and here where I live, only one freight operator in the country, so still need to get used to the many operators thing... :D

You are right about the jarring, cab rattling curve transitions. They still have a few of these on the route. Someone else would have to tell how easy it would be for them to fix it. I'm not an expert in that department.

As for which railroads run over Donner pass.... depends on the period. This route in the sim is early 1990s which was when SP owned it and was before the merger. UP owned the Western Pacific Feather River route a couple hours north of Donner Pass at that time. BNSF has some trackage rights on the pass as well as Amtrak. Santa Fe (now BNSF) have historically depended on trackage rights because most of the routes into California were owned by other railroads. Southern Pacific was in the best position in California. They owned the tracks in northern California into Oregon, Donner Pass into Nevada and the Yuma sub into Arizona.

Today Union Pacific dominates California access wise. If all the railroads lost trackage rights on each others routes, BNSF would clearly be at the biggest disadvantage. Union Pacific clearly has more options and routes in and out of California then BNSF.

Hope that clears things up for you. !!howdy!!
