USATC S160 - Victory Works

Unread postby VictoryWorks » Fri Feb 20, 2015 5:10 am

Hi all

Although this is not technically a DTG creation we do publish via them on Steam (and this loco will be no exception) so this seemed a reasonable place to put this thread. If the mods think otherwise please move me to the right place :D

I don't expect anyone to know me necessarily so a quick introduction:
My name's Pete Gillam, commonly known as Karma99 on UKTS and other train simming sites. I produced the first scripted attempt at a semi-realistic steam engine in the GWR 56xx back in the days of Railworks, and in the past year I've been running Victory Works and we have produced the GWR Steam Railmotor, Bulleid Q1, GWR 14xx/58/xx with Autocoach and GWR Small Prairies.
Suffice to say we've been rather busy!

I tend to lurk here and read a little but I haven't posted to date as all of my locos have been very UK-centric and although I know you're not exclusive to US content that is certainly the major interest here.

But as the title suggests we are about to embark on creation of the USATC S160 which were produced and used in the US as well as being shipped over the entire world. I've written a blog post here of my intentions.
I'm pleased to say that sounds will be created by Steam Sounds Supreme who have an excellent history of custom sound sets for numerous steam locos, and it will be furnished with all of our usual features: scripted steam chest, 3d modelled firebox, custom realistic wheel slip (not the core stuff!), numerous operable cab parts, and as we always try to do - as many liveries and variations as possible.

The last part is where we could really do with input from your side of the pond - are there specific liveries, variants and fittings that you would want? Obviously we're restricted by certain licensing however DTG have a lot of agreements in place and are always working on more so I'd rather have all suggestions so we can pursue them.
We have a lot of research already but if you have links to images or images you can share to support your requests then all the better. The more information the easier it is to include what you want.

Thank you,
Pete

Have you seen Tourret's Allied Military Locomotives of the Second World War? There is extensive coverage of builders, number series (it's complicated), principal variants and disposal to other railway administrations, through UNRRA, after the War. It's possible that the USATC Museum at Ft. Eustis may have additional information. PM me if you want further details.

Thanks for the reply.
I don't have that book however I have just taken possession of a copy of "Over Here. The story of the S160" by R N Higgins which is 80 pages packed with data solely on the S160 and it's variants and lists Tourret's as a source so I suspect the majority of the information relating to the S160 is included.
Sadly I can't send or receive PM's yet - apparently I even have one waiting that I can't read! - as I've only just signed up to the forum. That'll teach me to be an anonymous lurker rather than a participant! *!embar*!

I'd like to see the US Army appearance of the engines of Fort Eustis Virginia make it into the pack.

That "'elf & safety" yellow is just appalling *!sad!* White accents are bad enough - looks like something from an elementary child's colouring in book...

That said, the more US steam the better. !!*ok*!! As somebody posted elsewhere, the next issue is having somewhere proto to run it. personally I would like to see an unlined, un-marked version that can be utilised anywhere with a little imagination... A purpose created sound set will be fantastic too...

**!!2cents!!**

Thanks all, we've taken note of the requests and do keep adding more if you come across them.

A lot of the original S160 liveries are actually very plain (there was war on ya know *!!wink!!* ) so I think the idea for a "run anywhere version" will be achieved by a few of the historic liveries.

We're delighted that for this project the sounds are being created by Steam Sounds Supreme who are a premier producer of add on sound packs for UK steam locos who we've worked with previously and I have no doubt they will create a fantastic sound set for it - when I spoke to Matt (the owner) about it I could almost hear him drooling when he was talking about the whistle!

Thank you :D

Career scenarios? Yes.
3? We like to do at least 5 scenarios with our addons, however...
The route choice is VERY tricky! The upside of doing liveries from multiple countries is that we hope it will appeal to lots of different users, the downside is that being able to only include scenarios for 1 route means we have to target them somewhere. So the route choice is very much up in the air at the moment, and although we like to do at least 5 scenarios with our addons I'm not sure that 5 will even cover every livery we hope to include, so current thinking is that included scenarios will be less of a focus for this pack and we will include an absolute ton of Quick Drive consists and try to have some "day of release" Workshop scenarios ready to go as well.

But all of this is in progress at the moment, so everything could change :D
