50ft PS-1 Boxcar

Unread postby GreatNortherner » Wed Apr 27, 2011 2:13 pm

Hi,

A new freight car is available: a PS-1 50ft boxcar. It comes in three versions: one from the 1950s with roofwalk and high-mounted brake wheel, one a bit later with a chopped roofwalk, and one from the 1970s with a completely removed roofwalk and rebuilt end fittings.

A repaint kit is available too! The 'PRR X50' textures are fictional, the X50-class wasn't actually a PS-1 car of this type, but looked quite similar.

BTW, this model is based on the old bonus car from my payware packs and is the first of many updated models that I'm working on. A new bonus pack is in production too to replace the old boxcar. More about that later!

This one will install as a new rail vehicle though, so those of you who have the old bonus car can keep it (and any potential repaints there may be) in place.

You can download it soon from the file libraries near you, or get it right now on my website.

Here are some screenshots:

I know a few folks who will be tickled by this...

First model I ever built. My dad bought an Athearn 50ft WP boxcar kit for my HO train set.

BTW Michael, how do you change the number color to black? Simple color substitution didn't work.

WOW.

I am still trying to strip the rust off the doors... how did you do it?

Did you get the repaint kit? It's all in layers. You can shut off the rust and stuff by making the layers not visible.

Actually I have the beta repaint kit.

I will download the release version. Michael says that the repaint kit is exactly the same, but I'll check.

Update: So with both the beta and the release models I am finding that the skin is stretched slightly. Note the 'Plate C' white square near the auto-number. In PS it is square, and in game its rectangular.

Looks really nice! Once I resolve the number issue, the WP and the CN GP7 will go up. Still waiting for Mr. Cowen on the MP15... sorry.

Nice to see more exploiting of bump-maps finally, somewhat under-explored in RW in general. Looks good! I can't tell one boxcar from another, but I could make a lot out of that model with the right inspiration.

( and no I haven't forgotten my 40ft CN thing, I just managed to get my number widget working in-game ).

YEAH!!!! !*YAAA*!
WP!!! Great work Mike, many thanks!

Black numbers should be possible by cloning the number textures in the numbers folder and then editing them with RWTools and DXT2BMP. HOWEVER, first please let me check, I should have some back roman font numbers somewhere. I'll try to find all the numbers I did over the years and package them for these boxcars.

BTW: Some more news for the PS-1 fans -- I'm sure at least one person on this forum is going to really like this: !!howdy!!

Cheers!
