New Philadelphia <-- new route announcement

New postby rgarber » Thu May 13, 2010 12:18 pm

With most of the release work for Fort Kent finished I began a new route that runs from New Philadelphia to Massillon, Ohio. I rarely know anything about a route when I start it and this one is no different. But with a lot of help from Mike Spinelli I can see I'm tangling with a hornet's nest of steel mills, rolling mills, aluminum industry and chemical in a fairly compact area. What's neat about this route is it's ripe for expansion to the west and northeast to Canton. That's right folks, another Canton! I'm even toying with eventually calling the route New Canton. But that's for a worry a long time down the road. Right now I'm only in the laying track phase between New Philadelphia and Massillon. Here's an idea of what the route looks like.

The route now is owned by somebody called RJ Coreman? Names the route after himself, I guess? Mike says the route was originally run by B&O but there's a second line coming in from the north (it looks like a junction there at the top where I have track laid to but it's actually they are separated), the N&W. I dunno we'll get it all sorted out eventually but for now I thought I would share the progress on the next All Aboard route. :D

So, you lay your track first, and then add scenery? I've tried just doing a little track at a time, and completing the scenery for that part. I haven't tried the all at once approach though.

As usual....hurry up.

I know it will be good because you do excellence work. Been buying since Canton and MSTS and have never been disappointed. If and when you get to a tough part and have a bad day just stop on by and we will encourage you. !*YAAA*! **!!bow!!**

Thanks Kinnie, I'm hurrying! !!*ok*!! I'll have a little more to post about the route shortly.

@Trainguy - Yep, it's a carry-over from my years with MSTS. It helps to keep my track laying technique consistent or look consistent from start to end of the project. There's a variety of other reasons I can think of though I think most of them are personal preference.

Crap, take your time, Rich. I still haven't done all the work you put on my schedule on Fort Kent's add on's. But, you can bet, this is next on my list. !!*ok*!!

Shoot Chris... that's my problem now... I am taking my time! **!!bang!!** Nah, this home improvement stuff I've been into the past several months is taking up a lot of my time. I got that hoist up and working in my shed yesterday - took several hours and multiple Plan B's for it to work right. I'm nearly done with the mainline track though. Woohoo!

Hiya Gordon! Thanks for reminding me of this thread. I can do an update here. The mainline track is done and for giggles I'm laying track for the Steel Mill. This is one big sucker. But first he's a pic of the route.

I should have been at this point several days ago but lots of distractions going on. Here's another pic...

This is just a small area of the mill I was working on today. This was tricky stuff to do because all of this is on grades. Not a flat piece of track til you get over the bridge in the background you really can't see. The mill itself has been torn down for at least a decade now so I went back to the 1994 version of GoogleEarth to get to see the mill standing again. By no means am I even close to having the mill track laid out. What was critical first was to determine at what level the mill would be at. To do that I had to lay down the surrounding tracks first. The bridge (you can't see it) track and mill track are the same level (or close) so I had to work up to the bridge in order to get the mill level. But it was a lot trickier than doing just that. The yard tracks dip, so imagine pulling down the yard track and mainline in the middle and make sure the two ends are the same height. Anyway, the worst of building the mill track is over (or at least I think it is).

Mike Spinelli has been a super help sending me track info all the while and one of the resources has a track map of the mill. Extremely helpful! Thanks Mike!
