The Reason I Can't Go Back

A picture is worth a thousand words. It needs to be bigger to get the full effect, but it's easy to see what i'm getting at here.

With this image mod I've installed you're no longer limited to the size of the image you attach to a post, as long as it's a jpg.

Hi Jerry, the yard looks great. I also understand completely, Rail Works is a giant step up from the sim we were using. The only thing that drags me down is the lack of motive power. Is it the cost of the software that keeps people out of the locomotive payware market in Rail Works?

Then what is the reason we don't see sites like Diesels West or SLI creating diesel add-on's for Rail Works? What is the reason why people are not creating motive power for Rail Works?

Well, if you ask those sites straight up, you get a reply like "Railworks has some serious issues that need to be addressed, such as lack of AI, before we will consider making rolling stock for the game".

The real reason though is two-fold. One, they already have a fanbase of people who won't jump ship from MSTS because it relatively cheap and they already have ten years or more invested in it. Two, and the biggest reason, is that its "to hard" to make locomotives for Railworks. Compare what it takes to get one into MSTS verses what it takes for Railworks and you will see what I mean. For example, Jointed Rail made one locomotive for RW, then went running back to Trainz with their tail-tucked, spouting off nonsense about the AI problems. I mean really, if you are making locomotives, and people are willing to pay you for them, would you really give a rat about whether or not the AI in the sim works?

I agree with both of these reasons 100%. If I was able to produce an engine the AI would have nothing to do with it. And as many complaints I see about what Railworks cant do I just dont understand it as I have no problems at all. Nineteen months building a route and never had it crash or SBHH while painting or placing objects or deleteing signals and replacing them or anything like I have heard so many complain about. Now on the other hand I did not do any modifications to the Railworks files so I am running what they gave us al lthistime.

I would never go back. The MSTS days are over for me. Last year I spent most of my time learning Railworks and working the scenario editor.
I agree with Rich S. There is a big lack of motive power but there is a small glimmer of hope between a few folks and RSC.
Every so often on Facebook (which is about due) I post on Railworks page about a EMD SD9. RSC did a excellent job on the GP9 so add 2 more axles.

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for the reply and I was afraid it was because some of the people were stuck in their tracks *!lol!* I've also had the same experience as Bob, 2 years and running and only 1 SBHH while route building. I'm not sure what I did, but when I restarted the World Editor every thing was still good to go. In the other sim if you didn't save every time you placed an object you were taking big chances and there were a few times the route would crash, you restart the editor and your track was floating in mid air.

Jerry keep up the great work on your NS route, it looks fantastic. I also want to thank you for all of the really nice objects you've created for the community, your crossing signals, signals, homes and wayside buildings are all top notch !!*ok*!!

Regards,
Rich S.

Same here with regard to route building ease. The rare (emphasize rare) crash I had over about a year of route building was with the elevation tool. So I always saved just before trying to adjust the height of the rail or any other loft.

The stability of the World Editor does have one drawback. It is so stable that I often forget to F2 after making any changes - a habit I picked up from MSTS. Now RW usually isnt a problem, but i'm usually also running 3DCanvas, Adobe Photoshop, Chrome, and Google Earth while editing a route, and it's usually one of those programs that ends up crashing and screwing EVERYTHING up. After losing a couple hours worth of work a few times, i've learned to abuse the F2 key again. **!!bang!!**

there is absolutely no reason Diesels West or jointed Rail could not make models for RW, not that hard to get the model over and if the models were decent in the first place they can convert over rather easily now.

I been banging my head on that wall for a long while. No one at either place (or MLT) is listening.
